Commissioned by a high-end brasserie for Christmas 2021, in partnership with Early Hours Ltd.
This project consisted of several elements; a wooden carousel front, some sourced vintage carousel horses that were given a fresh coat of paint and three horses made from scratch.
THE CAROUSEL
The carousel front consisted of a large and sturdy semicircle plywood base separated into four sections - for ease of transport. On top of the base was a layer of flexiply overlaid with some hand-cut, colourful shapes. The whole was then adorned with golden wooden mouldings, giving it a stunningly regal effect.
CARVING AND SCULPTING THE HORSES
The hand-carved horses were carefully cut out of a large polystyrene block using a wooden stencil and an electrical hot wire cutter, then shaped using metal brushes. The horse is then covered in grout, sanded and given a lovely coat of paint.
PAINTING THE HORSES
During this last step, we suffered a building-wide electrical power cut. With our imminent deadline, we powered through - pardon the pun - and painted the remaining horses using our spray guns, head-torches and a lot of patience.
